Poinsett Bridge
The Oldest Remaining Bridge In South Carolina
Little Gap Creek flows under the gothic stone arch of Poinsett Bridge, located in Greenville, SC. The bridge, built in 1820, is part of the original state road connecting Greenville to Asheville, NC. The bridge was named in honor of Joel Roberts Poinsett, who was director of the SC Board of Public Works at the time the bridge was built. Poinsett also served as US Ambassador to Mexico. He is probably best known for introducing the poinsettia plant from Mexico to the United States.
